How to Achieve a Healthy Work Life Balance in the New Year

As we wind down from the whirlwind of a year that 2020 was, it’s time to start reflecting on all the things that we’ve learned as we head into the New Year. Although there have been many uphill battles, one thing that this pandemic has taught many is finding the support that we need from our co-workers, family and friends during these difficult times. As we head into a hopeful 2021, it’s important to maintain these relationships while we achieve a healthy work life balance.

Setting Goals for Your Work Life:

In today’s environment with the constant overstimulation we endure with the media, smart devices, and high stress working environments, it can be easy to find yourself becoming overanxious. If you find yourself constantly trying to fit everything into your busy  work schedule, meet tight deadlines, you might want to start the New Year with a plan by setting goals you wish to accomplish in your work life. Maybe you wish to learn a new skill as the New Year begins or you’d like to attend more webinars to help with your professional development. Whatever field or position you’re working in, there is always room for growth, and there are hundreds of skills you could learn that will help you benefit your career. You could even start by reading a career-related motivational book that will help you succeed as the New Year progresses!

Setting Goals for Your Personal Life:

It’s also important to remember to take time for yourself. This past year has been full of challenges, whether it be working from home or learning to work in an environment that requires new safety precautions; it can be easy to get caught up in these new standards. Whether you’re working from home or working at the office still, finding a work/life balance can be very challenging, especially when there is always another task or deadline looming overhead. You may even feel like you have been losing quality time for yourself while trying to keep up with the everchanging environments of today. If you find yourself being distracted rather than being able to live in and enjoy the moment, you might want to think about reclaiming your mental and physical space. Remember to take time for yourself at the end of the day. Whether you decide to meditate or try a new workout class or take time to read something you’re interested in or start a new series, don’t forget to take care of your mind and body first.

Setting Goals for Your Social Life:

Due to the pandemic, you may have felt like you didn’t get to spend as much time with your friends or even some of your family members that live further away. We know Zoom was the next best thing to seeing someone, but actually seeing someone in person isn’t the same as seeing them through a screen. Set goals in 2021 that will help you to reconnect with your favorite people. If rules and regulations are still in place for most of this new year, although we certainly hope not, try new ways of staying connected to one another. Instead of scheduled Zoom calls, try a fun and free app like House Party where you can virtually play games with your friends while still seeing them — a new version of game night. We know how easy it can be to fall in a rut of just being home when there’s nowhere else to go but it can help to create a list of activities you want to do with your friends and family when you’re able to again. Reach out to your loved ones and plan for weekends when you can get together and reflect on the special bond that you have with them. You may even get to use this opportunity for a destination getaway with your saved-up vacation time!
